Aerial Silks

Learn Aerial Silks

Aerial Silks is a beautiful circus and acrobatics inspired discipline. If you’ve watched ‘The Greatest Showman’, you will have likely spotted the gorgeous aerial ribbon routines! This beautiful discipline has a particular focus on increasing upper body strength and stamina.

You will be able to create a variety of beautiful shapes entwined in the Aerial Silks, whilst being suspended above ground. Using the silk fabric, you will be able to wrap, suspend, drop, swing and spiral in and out of a variety of exciting poses and tricks.

Our aerial silks are rigged via a single point to the ceiling and have a swivel attached, allowing the silks to spin when you add momentum to your movements. This skill looks particularly impressive, as you are above ground level at all times and it really does feel like you are flying! It’s so much fun!

There is no previous experience or minimum fitness level requisites to join our new introduction courses – as you will start working towards increasing your stamina and endurance from the very first lesson. However, we do recommend ideally a reasonable level of upper body strength as this is our hardest skill to learn as a new beginner.

We love aerial skills such as silks, as they are such progressive to learn and you can see your progress as the weeks go on. That’s why we love to take photos and videos during classes (totally optional) as you can look back and see how far you have come! . It’s such a fun and unique skill to learn and it’s really different to any class you can find at your local gym!

Many of our members not only enjoy the physical workout but also the the ‘brain workout’ this exciting skill offers. There are many technical elements, as you learn knots and sequences, which will get you really thinking.

Dress code

  • We recommend cotton based leggings (not shiny material) for aerial silks, so you can grip a little extra. We always wear long sleeves to protect our skin, as there are dynamic elements.

  • At Elements, we train in barefoot and socks. We encourage you to bring a pair of socks so you have the option, as it can make some moves feel a little smoother. We ask you to please take your shoes off at the door, to protect our beautiful professional dance door.

  • This is really important please, no jewellery. This is a really strict rule for sills, as any jewellery would risk snagging our beautiful silks. Stud earrings can stay in but anything dangly like necklaces, hoops, etc, please remove before the class. If you cannot remove your rings, please let your instructor know and we can cover them with some tape.

  • We recommend tying your hair up where possible, just to get it out your way! However, we totally understand that some of you may feel more confident with it down, so do what feels right for you! If you change your mind when you are here, we have hair ties you can help yourself to.

  • Super important, please do not moisturise or apply fake tan to your hands, at least 24-hours prior to your lesson. As much as we all love to have a good moisturise, unfortunately it’s not your friend when it comes to aerial disciplines. If you turn up with moisturiser on, you risk making your hands very slippery and not having a very good class. It also risks staining our silks. So, save the moisturiser for after silks class, not before!

Frequently asked questions

  • Aerial Silks is definitely one of our more challenging skills as it does require a fair amount of strength to be able to lift and hold your body weight. However, the couple of courses will be more ground based and we will work towards increasing your strength, as the lessons progress. So, as long as you don’t mind a challenging workout - you can join at any point in your fitness journey.

  • Especially at the start, you will be close enough to the floor to step down at any time. So don’t worry, you won’t be high up.

  • No, please don’t worry - there is no weight limit on our silks as they are professionally installed and reinforced into the ceiling. They are rigged with steel attachments are load tested for extreme weights and they are also designed for rock climbing (so are super safe!)

  • There is absolutely no need to do this. Please don’t let this hold you back from coming to class. If losing weight is something you want to do, our classes are a fantastic way to burn calories and improve your fitness – so use it as a reason to start, not something which stops you.

  • We totally understand you may feel nervous about starting a class and want to check it out first but everyone is in the ‘same boat and often feeling exactly the same. Our classes are super friendly, small and personal - we only allow up to 8-participants at a time. So, please be brave and just come join in! If you feel too anxious to join a group class, book in a private lesson to come try it out first.

How to get started

You have three options to join us aerial silks:

If you see an Introduction to Aerial Hoop course on our timetable, you can just sign yourself in and register for the course. If there are no introductory courses available, you can contact us to join our waiting list and we will let you know when we next have a new beginners course starting. If you already have pole experience, get in touch with us and we can recommend the best class for you.

If you see a time and date which works for you but its at a higher level, if you are willing to have private tuition to learn the level(s) you missed, we can get caught up to join. A typical example of the number of private lessons needed is 2-3 lessons per level. So to join a Level 2 course, you’d need a couple of private lessons to learn the Level 1 content you missed.
